Slide 1
  • Hello my name is Sam Betlem
  • For my studio work, I have chosen quite a big project to aim for. I am planning to design a dwarven city for an RPG MMO style game.
  • The concept for the town is a seven story vertical structure designed into the side of a mountain.
  • Throughout BA7 I plan to research into dwarven myth, story's and different interpretations, trying to design a culture and nature for my own, giving them there own unique feel.
  • I want to research different styles of dwarves structures, religion, history, culture and life to help me flesh out what a dwarf city should look and feel like.
  • Designing Model sheets for each building, and various environment art will play a part of this I will also describe the whole design process of Environment design looking into textures, lighting, model design and everything else that I will need to consider for helping me design my BA8
  • When pushing this idea into BA8 as I understand that designing the city is a very difficult task. In an ideal world that would be what I want to design, however as this project is large-scale, I will probably end up designing a key building or section of the city.

  • I am really struggling with what I want to focus on in my research report I am keen on create a technical report on my studio work looking into the design process for a 3D artist creating a fantasy setting. Though beyond that I am lost at what I want to specialize in.
  • I am pushing towards looking into the process of what a professional level designer would have to go through to get a level completed.
  • This I hope will help me with my design process for my own studio work, by researching and understanding what the professional process is. I want to get into contact with various level designers to get an accurate understanding of the scope for there work.
  • In doing this it should improve my own studio work as well as give me a clear pipeline and understanding of what is achievable and expected.
  • Thank you for watching and I hope what I plan to work on is an acceptable task to aim for. 


Evaluation of presentation 
Studio Work
I was not happy with how my presentation went, i came in with a confident idea of what to focus my studio work on, yet the tutors found problems with my concept.
  • Fantasy assets are overused
  • Not a unique 3D model idea
This made me think about scrapping everything i have worked on thus far, i have emailed my tutor to get a one on one tutorial to help revaluate the studio concept. I am still awaiting a reply, but i am confident i could refine this idea or come up with a new one. It may mean changing the idea of dwarfs as a whole, changing the race, or scrapping the fantasy idea as a whole. Which is a heavy burden for me fantasy is what inspires me and keeps me working hard. Reguardless i am still enthusiatic and am trying to keep positive about my 3D work.

C.S Work
My C.S work was lacking direction heavily, with me unsure with what i want to write about, and unsure about what style of writing corresponded with what. I have also emailed my C.S tutor in the hope she can offer me some guidance to what direction i should follow, and hopefully get me thinking creatively about what i will design.
